When a loved one transitions to hospice care, you may think therapy stops. That isn’t true. Physical therapy can be part of hospice care when it supports comfort and quality of life rather than cure.
At Active Home Health, Hospice and Personal Care, we treat the whole person. We help patients move safely, reduce pain, and preserve dignity during life’s final chapter.
Is Physical Therapy Covered Under Hospice?
Medicare and many insurers cover physical therapy as part of hospice when it supports comfort care. The goal is to improve quality of life, not to regain full strength or achieve recovery.
What Does Physical Therapy Look Like in Hospice?
Physical therapy during hospice is gentle and focused on comfort. A therapist may:
- Promote comfort and mobility by teaching safe repositioning, preventing pressure sores, and easing joint stiffness. Small
improvements in mobility make a big difference in comfort. - Prevent falls with simple balance exercises, safe transfer techniques, and advice on home modifications. This reduces the risk of injuries.
- Support breathing by improving posture and teaching breathing exercises, especially for patients with chronic respiratory conditions.
- Preserve dignity and independence by helping patients perform basic tasks like using the bathroom or changing positions with less assistance.
What Physical Therapy Does Not Include in Hospice
Because hospice care focuses on comfort rather than cure, it does not include intense rehabilitation or strength training. Therapy goals do not aim for full recovery or long‑term improvement. The purpose is comfort and function.
Is Physical Therapy Right for Every Hospice Patient?
Not always. Some patients may be too weak or may choose not to participate. The hospice team, including the patient and family, decides if physical therapy can meaningfully improve comfort or safety.
Physical therapy on hospice can help patients stay safe, reduce pain, and feel more in control of their bodies. While not appropriate for everyone, it is one more way that hospice care focuses on quality of life. At Active Home Health, Hospice and Personal Care, we tailor every care plan to the individual. If physical therapy can bring comfort, safety, or dignity, we will include it.
