Accessing Home Health & Hospice Benefits Through the VA

Our nation’s veterans deserve excellent care as their needs change. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides VA hospice and home health Utah benefits to help veterans stay comfortable and independent. These programs support both veterans and their families through every stage of care.

VA Hospice Care: Comfort and Dignity

VA hospice care focuses on comfort and quality of life for veterans facing terminal illness. All enrolled veterans qualify for hospice when they meet clinical need. They pay no copays for hospice care, whether the VA provides it directly or through a contracted community agency (VA.gov).

Hospice teams work with families to build a personalized care plan. This plan includes pain control, emotional support, and spiritual guidance. Families also receive bereavement counseling after a loss. Care takes place at home, in a facility (Assisted Living, Memory Care, Or Independent Living), or in an inpatient setting (Nursing Facility, Hospital, or Skilled Nursing Facility).

For more in depth information about Active’s hospice services read our “Everything to know about Hospice” .

Homemaker and Home Health Aide Care: Help at Home

The VA also offers Homemaker and Home Health Aide (HMKR/HHA) care. Trained aides help veterans with personal activities like dressing, bathing, and meal preparation. A registered nurse supervises the aide and checks each veteran’s needs (VA.gov).

This program helps veterans who need personal care, live alone, or have caregivers who need relief. A copay may apply depending on service-connected disability status. In some cases, HMKR/HHA services combine with other VA home programs.

Aides can assist with:

  • Eating and meal prep

  • Grooming and dressing

  • Bathing and bathroom needs

  • Moving safely around the home

  • Light errands and shopping

Benefits of VA Home Health and Hospice Services

When veterans enroll in these programs, they gain a full support network. Covered benefits include no-cost hospice care, medications, and home medical equipment (Compassus).

The care team coordinates with doctors and other providers. They also offer emotional and spiritual care for both veterans and families. Many receive therapy support such as occupational therapy and home health.

As a result, veterans maintain comfort and dignity while families gain peace of mind.

Eligibility and Enrollment

To access these VA benefits, veterans must:

  1. Enroll in VA health care.

  2. Meet clinical criteria for hospice, home health or home care.

  3. Work with a VA social worker to arrange services.

  4. Gather discharge papers (DD-214), service records, and insurance information.

If distance makes travel hard, the VA MISSION Act allows veterans to receive care from local community providers. Veterans can also explore programs like We Honor Veterans, which trains hospice teams to understand veteran needs.
